Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
